Frangipani Stories

Terracotta. The beginning of Frangipani

Where everything begins with clay

Frangipani terracotta is made in traditional Balinese workshops, where the making process has remained unchanged for generations. There are no machines, industrial moulds or production lines. There is clay, water, the hands of craftspeople and time. Plenty of time. Each object begins as raw material, shaped and smoothed by hand without haste. The process calls for experience and sensitivity: a single careless movement can alter a proportion.

This is what makes every piece unique.

The terracotta used by Frangipani has a naturally warm tone and a visible texture. It is not perfectly smooth, nor is it meant to be. Subtle irregularities, fine surface cracks and differences in texture reveal the work of the hand. They give the objects character and the presence of sculpture rather than production-line goods. Every piece is a little different. That is part of its value.

Fire, patience and experience

Once shaped, the objects dry naturally, without accelerated drying or artificial hardening. Only then do they enter the kilns for firing at high temperatures. This is one of the most important stages: fire determines the material's durability, colour and final texture. Balinese craftspeople judge readiness through experience rather than the clock. They know when the terracotta is ready and when it needs more time.

This is why Frangipani products are durable, solid and resilient. They are not fragile decorative imitations, but objects made for real interiors and everyday use. Every stage takes place locally, without shortcuts or compromises in quality. This is craft that embodies luxury through the way it is made.

Balinese terracotta is a material with history, culture and character. Frangipani gives it a contemporary interpretation. We combine traditional techniques with a modern understanding of form and proportion. The result is a collection of lasting objects, unconcerned with passing trends. True craftsmanship speaks for itself.
